Located in Wheaton, Illinois, Cantigny Park is a commanding estate of history and activities for the local Chicago community. As part of the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, Cantigny Park is home to a multitude of destination experience options that include museums, gardens, golf, dining, events, and more. With the large amount of activities available, Cantigny was looking to partner with Frey Design to update their website so that it focused more on its usability experience for its customers and a refresh in design.
Focusing our efforts on user experience, Frey Design tirelessly worked to develop an interface that was highly visual, easy to use, and was unique to the park. We transformed the existing design by utilizing high quality imagery from the park itself to show off its beautiful and inviting features. Since Cantigny is a destination spot for the greater Chicagoland area, it was particularly important to highlight the different activities and events that Cantigny has to offer, both in the weeks to come, as well as what you can enjoy at the park today. The use of icons, images, and season-specific color palettes help to guide the user through the site. Frey also dedicated time for a comprehensive restructuring to the overall sitemap, internal pages, and navigation to allow for greater content organization and flow throughout the new design.
While upgrading Cantigny’s site, there was a large emphasis on developing user friendly organization. Frey helped to achieve this goal by designing functional pieces that were able to be easily navigated and understood. A standout within the site is the extensive events calendar that shows past and future events with the ability to filter by different categories, dates, and keywords, as well as be viewed in both month and list formats. This attention to detail helps to create a customized experience based on the specific user looking to make Cantigny their destination spot. Frey also took careful consideration on how to implement additional navigation systems to allow for more in-depth information and pages to be organized and categorized. Another unique attribute of the enhanced Cantigny site is the CSS color swap application within the site that changes the overall site palette with each season. Overall, Cantigny’s site upgrading presented exciting opportunities to create well-designed, practical additions to enhance the user experience.
